Fire Risk Assessments

New Fire Safety Legislation effects you!!

"The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001 establishes a duty on employers to achieve a risk appropriate standard of fire safety to persons in the workplace…It will be YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to comply fully with the duty imposed."

So begins a statement by the Chief Fire Officer of the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade in a leaflet designed to advise employers and building owners of their responsibilities under this new legislation.

A copy of this leaflet is available at www.nifrs.org/fire_safety.php?sec=1172 for your information and covers the general principles behind the legislation including the requirement to conduct a Fire Risk Assessment.

This is where 9yards fire safety can help you in complying with your statutory duties. Whether you are responsible for a single shop unit or a large industrial or entertainment complex we have the expertise and experience to assist you in completing and recording your Fire Risk Assessment. Our assessors are qualified and practiced Fire Safety Engineers and members of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Self-Competency

Of course, you as an employer best know the risks associated with your business and so may feel capable of conducting a Risk Assessment unaided but should you have any doubts about the suitability of your experience just consider the following extract from Regulation 7 of the 2000 Management Regulations:

"Every employer shall…appoint one or more competent persons to assist him in undertaking the measures he needs to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed upon him by or under the relevant statutory provisions.. [except where the employer].. has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and other qualities to enable him properly to undertake the measures…himself." (Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000, Regulation 7, paraphrased)

By appointing 9yards fire safety you can be assured that your consultant holds certification from the Institution of Fire Engineers verifying their competency in undertaking Fire Risk Assessments under the Workplace Fire Precautions Legislation.
